On Thursday, December 18, the Bank of England in a very narrow 5-4 decision lowered the key interest rate by 0.25% to 3.75%. The ECB kept its main interest rate, the deposit rate, unchanged at 2.00% as inflation is close to its inflation target. The ECB now expects an inflation rate of 1.9% for 2026 and has revised its growth forecast for the Eurozone upward from 1.0% to 1.2% for 2026. US inflation was at 2.7% in November, which was below expectations of 3.1%, as reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lower inflation rate in the US has boosted the stock markets.
On Thursday, December 18, Trump Media DJT announced a merger with TAE Technologies, resulting in a stock price increase of over 35%. Micron MU benefited from a nearly 12% rise as demand for AI memory has increased. At the same time, Eli Lilly LLY announced positive results for its obesity pill.
