Daily Market Report – January 7, 2026
The dominant theme was Venezuela: Statements regarding US oil deliveries from Venezuela pressured oil prices and influenced risk appetite and sector rotation.
In Asia, geopolitical tensions (including China/Japan) also led to more defensive tendencies; the yen, which has significantly lost value in recent months, was sought as a safe haven.
Stocks Europe/UK: After a strong start to the year, the markets took a bit of pace out today. Energy stocks, including BP BP and Shell SHELL, faced selling pressure due to falling oil prices; the precious metals/mining sector also showed weakness amid lower gold prices.
USA: US stocks remain near record levels, but the momentum appeared more selective. Intel INTC unveiled its next laptop chip generation today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The stock is gaining nearly 10%.
Bonds & FX Government bonds: Ahead of a series of important economic data, investors positioned themselves more defensively; in the US Treasury market, bets on falling yields or rising prices increased, according to Bloomberg. (11:00 ET)
