Daily Market Report – February 5, 2026
The stock markets were once again under the impression of a broad reassessment of the AI boom on February 5, 2026: Investors are increasingly questioning how quickly the rapidly rising investments in data centers will translate into profits. In the U.S., major indices fell significantly; the technology sector was particularly burdensome, while bonds were sought after due to weaker labor market signals.
At the center was Alphabet NASDAQ:GOOGL: Despite strong quarterly numbers, the announced massive expansion of investments caused unease. According to the company, capital expenditures are expected to rise to $175 to $185 billion in 2026 – the stock subsequently fell by more than 5%. The problem: Given the high capital expenditures, free cash flow will decline.
One of the strongest declines in the large semiconductor segment was recorded by Qualcomm NASDAQ:QCOM, which temporarily lost around 9–11% after a cautious outlook. Management spoke of supply bottlenecks and rising costs; the projected revenue for the upcoming quarter was below expectations.
The movement was accompanied by a continued weakness in software and data service providers, which had already been heavily impacted in recent days: Investors fear that new AI tools could attack traditional licensing and subscription models faster than previously assumed. In this context, interest is shifting away from the pure growth story towards two hard criteria: investment discipline and visible monetization of AI offerings.
