Daily Market Report – August 21, 2026

Markets

The S&P 500 (SPX) closed 0.46 percent higher at 7,676 points. The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) gained 0.33 percent to 29,308 points. The Dow Jones (DJI) rose by 1.04 percent to 53,306 points, while the DAX (DAX) ended trading 0.59 percent higher at 26,137 points. The Hang Seng (HSI) increased by 2.02 percent to 26,009 points. Gold (GOLD) became more expensive by 2.29 percent to $4,675.90. Concerns about American debt and the announced buybacks by the Treasury Department influenced trading.

Company

Tesla (TSLA) rose by 5.11 percent to $362.76 despite the recall of 3 million vehicles in China. The reason for the recall is risks associated with the door handles and driver monitoring. Volkswagen (VOW3) came into focus after CEO Oliver Blume described the situation of the group as critical and declared the previous savings as insufficient.

Broadcom (AVGO) is reportedly negotiating a debt financing for AI chips. This is intended to secure computing capacity for Anthropic and other customers. SpaceX (SPCX) reportedly serves as a benchmark for the planned IPO of Anthropic. With a stock buyback, SK Hynix (000660) set the standard for capital return among South Korean semiconductor manufacturers. Samsung Electronics (005930) announced a comprehensive distribution program for its shareholders in light of high profits from its AI chip business.

Uber (UBER) came under scrutiny due to a Dutch fine for automated driver bans. Apollo Global Management (APO) announced that attackers accessed personal data during a cyber incident in July. Apple (AAPL) cut jobs in the teams for Siri, Vision Pro, immersive videos, and games. This consolidates the company's resources for new devices and artificial intelligence.

Macroeconomics

According to the White House, a limited duty-free import of ground meat is expected to alleviate price pressure for American consumers as the deadline for new tariffs against Canada approaches. According to Destatis, strong machinery exports in June supported the half-year balance of the German engineering sector. The ECB is discussing a higher minimum reserve. An increase would withdraw additional interest-free liquidity from banks.
