Daily Market Report – August 24, 2026
Markets
Before the upcoming Nvidia results, the S&P 500 (SPX) lost 0.28 percent and closed at 7,653 points. The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) fell by 0.97 percent to 29,023 points. The DAX (DAX) ended trading nearly unchanged at 26,107 points, a decrease of 0.11 percent. In Asia, the trade dispute between the United States and Canada, as well as Alibaba's placement plans, weighed on the market. The Hang Seng (HSI) closed 1.89 percent lower at 25,517 points. WTI crude oil (CL1!) decreased by 2.39 percent to $84.98 per barrel due to initially limited Iran measures. Silver (SILVER) fell by 0.81 percent to $68.97 per ounce.
Company
Nvidia (NVDA) came into focus ahead of the quarterly report scheduled for Wednesday and following reports of higher prices for Blackwell and Rubin systems. Micron Technology (MU) lost 5.83 percent to $910.43 in the wake of weaker semiconductor stocks. Samsung Electronics (005930) fell 8.70 percent to 257,000 won in Seoul. Alibaba (BABA) announced a stock placement of $10.2 billion to finance its AI investments and subsequently came under selling pressure. SoftBank (9984) was reportedly preparing a large-scale retail bond to meet the rising capital needs of its AI strategy.
Apple (AAPL) cut positions in the areas of Vision Pro, Siri, and Intelligent Systems Experiences and shifted resources to new devices and artificial intelligence. SpaceX (SPCX) is planning for the upcoming year AI satellites with Nvidia technology to shift computing capacity into low Earth orbit. PDD (PDD) missed expectations with its second quarter revenue but exceeded them in adjusted profit.
Porsche (P911) agreed with Tata Consultancy Services on an AI project worth 1.5 billion dollars as well as the divestment of its consulting unit. Volkswagen (VOW3) entered a negotiation week under increased pressure from the employee side. This criticized the communication of the board. Ford (F) came under scrutiny due to its Canadian investments after the United States announced a 50 percent auto tariff.
Shell (SHEL) is reportedly considering the sale of American chemical plants, which Exxon Mobil (XOM) is interested in. Strategy (MSTR) established a liquidity reserve that can also be used for further purchases of Bitcoin (BTCUSD).
Macroeconomics
According to White House, the US government expanded the search for domestic projects for critical minerals needed for defense goods. This strengthened the industrial policy support for strategic supply chains. Additionally, the US government announced a 50 percent tariff on Canadian vehicles, escalating the trade conflict with Canada. The US Treasury threatened Iran's trading partners with sanctions and exclusion from dollar access. However, the proposed package of measures fell short of the previously expected more comprehensive steps.
