Markets
The S&P 500 (SPX) is trading 0.42 percent higher at 7,755 points. The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) gained 0.55 percent to 30,978 points. The DAX (DAX) finished trading nearly unchanged at 25,235 points. The Nikkei 225 (NI225) rose by 2.40 percent to 69,947 points. The yield on ten-year US Treasury bonds (US10Y) increased by 5 basis points to 5.33 percent. Silver (SILVER) became more expensive by 1.60 percent to $61.38.
Company
Schneider Electric (SU) agreed to acquire the industrial software provider PTC for $205 per share in cash and an enterprise value of $23.7 billion. PTC (PTC) benefited from the takeover offer. C.H. Robinson (CHRW) announced the acquisition of the freight broker RXO for $5.8 billion. The offered control premium drove RXO (RXO) higher. BT (BT.A) is acquiring TalkTalk out of bankruptcy and expects a financial burden of around £400 million. Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP) increased its takeover bid for Monte dei Paschi by €800 million to €34.5 billion, thereby gaining the support of a key shareholder.
Intel (INTC) came under pressure after indications of an additional partner for a large chip project called into question the expected role of the company. TSMC (TSM) thus moved into the spotlight as another project partner. Qualcomm (QCOM) licensed patents for Huawei's LogicFolding technology, securing access to a new method of chip manufacturing. Hon Hai Precision (2317) exceeded expectations with its quarterly revenue. Spending on AI infrastructure drove the business. Nvidia (NVDA) is facing a lawsuit from engineers of the startup due to its $20 billion licensing agreement with Groq.
General Motors (GM) announced additional hybrid models in response to the demand for drives between combustion engines and electric cars. Uber (UBER) is preparing to launch robotaxis in Munich and is linking the initiative to additional jobs in Germany. Chevron (CVX) appointed the former head of the new energy business, Jeff Gustavson, as Chief Financial Officer. With this, the company reorganized its leadership ahead of the later succession at the top of the company.
AppLovin (APP) gained 6.43 percent to 285.48 dollars.
Macroeconomics
According to the ECB, Chief Economist Philip Lane advocated for a moderate monetary policy response in light of a second wave of the energy shock. The central bank is meanwhile assessing the implications for inflation and the economy. According to the White House, the US government plans to ease restrictions on a tax-exempt diesel variant to reduce fuel costs. Brazil's presidential election will go to a runoff on October 25 after Flávio Bolsonaro's surprising lead. This brings rapid spending cuts and later interest rate reductions more into focus.
