Daily Market Report – August 15, 2026
Markets
The S&P 500 (SPX) closed 0.17 percent lower at 7,786 points. The Nasdaq 100 (NDX) decreased by 0.13 percent to 30,046 points. In contrast, the DAX (DAX) rose by 0.53 percent to 26,440 points, while the Hang Seng (HSI) lost 1.10 percent to 25,117 points. The yield on ten-year US Treasury bonds (US10Y) increased by about 6 basis points to 4.70 percent. In light of further attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, Brent crude oil (UKOIL) rose by 1.67 percent to $88.52 per barrel.
Company
In the semiconductor sector, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) gained 6.50 percent to $514.39. In contrast, Broadcom (AVGO) lost 5.94 percent to $392.99. Applied Materials (AMAT) fell 5.12 percent to $507.18.
Alibaba (BABA) came into focus due to the spread of its open AI models. Reports indicate that these recorded more than 3 billion downloads within six months. Meta Platforms (META) was in the spotlight due to the planned separation from the AI provider Manus and a possible lifting of Chinese travel restrictions for its founder.
PayPal (PYPL) rose in after-hours trading after reports of acquisition negotiations with interested parties following a rejected offer became known. Mastercard (MA) reported that it resolved a temporary disruption that had caused card payments to be declined in Australia.
Easyjet (EZJ) suffered from numerous flight cancellations due to a strike by cabin crew in France. Deutsche Bahn (DB1) is reportedly considering the reactivation of older freight cars to mitigate transport bottlenecks caused by low water levels on the Rhine.
Macroeconomics
According to White House, the US government is preparing further economic measures against Iran. At the same time, increased attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and stalled negotiations are raising risks for energy supply and global trade. China lodged a formal protest due to actions by the Japanese government at the Yasukuni Shrine. This has increased political tensions between the two countries. India announced a growth plan with additional chip factories and nuclear reactors to accelerate the expansion of its industrial capacities.
